Name Those Lyrics

Last Friday, my friend, Kim, and I were singing Twinkle, Twinkle in unison to keep Kate and her son, Cooper, calm and to help them fall asleep on our ride back into the City. We really did well, I might add, but we came to a point in the song where we sang different words. It was so funny to us. I have no idea what the right words are, so thought I would ask you what you sing. Here - I'll get you started...

Twinkle, Twinkle little star,
How I wonder ____ you are.
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
Twinkle, Twinkle little star,
How I wonder ____ you are.

Fill in the blank: WHERE or WHAT

What have you grown up singing? Is there a right answer? There has to be, right?

I was singing where, but then David pointed out that the song already talks about "where" the star is (up above the world so high...), so we are really trying to figure out "what" it is, right? Oh brother.

David and I laugh because we totally make up words to children's songs that we can't remember. The worst is Mama's Going To Buy You a Mockingbird. Don't get me started. Every time we sing it we sing something different and it usually ends up in a game between David and I and we end doubled over in laughter. Poor Kate.

Well, either way - whatever we sang last Friday... it worked.

It is definitely "what" in both places...well that's how I have sang it my whole life. I'm with you fortgeting the lyrics to these songs though...I'm the worst with my memory :) those are some precious sleeping babies

I have always sung, "what". But, Matt and I are known to make up our own words to songs...

SO FUNNY-i cannot for the life of me remember the words to the mockingbird song either.

i've only heard it sung "what you are".

but please don't change, shawna. some of my favorite memories are of you singing the wrong lyrics to much more than just children's songs :)

Yeah-- I say what too. Where you are, duh, up in the sky!!
I totally don't know the words to Mockingbird. This is such a great conversation b/c there are so many kids song's with crazy words!
My favorite is when you first had Kate and didn't know many songs to sing her so you sang Yankee Doodle!!

so funny...Yankee Doodle. What is up with that song?

..stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni? is he on drugs?

then..."mind the music with his step and with the girls be handy". what does THAT mean and should we be singing it to our kids? i think not.

Too funny! I also sing "what" in the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star song. But, Kate doesn't care what you sing - she just loves her mama's voice, I'm sure! I'm laughing as I read these comments - especially from Kimber and Courtney. :)

I think it's perfectly fine to sing both...depending on where you are emotionally - it all comes down to that, doesn't it? ha

Love the effect of that singing, that's the important thing...so precious!
